Hola,

The old Colt action design was a product of the late 1890's. It was complex, and required that the action be literally hand fitted. The action was built using over-sized forged parts in which a fitter would assemble the action by filing, stoning, and even bending parts to get a working revolver.
In line with the desire to make the Python the finest revolver ever made, Colt had the action even further polished and tuned to give the best possible trigger pull. So concerned was Colt that the Python would be the best ever made, for the first two years only two men built every Python produced by Colt. After they burned out, Colt put the Python into standard production using their best people.
The Colt Python
All the early Pythons had the "Royal Blue" polish and blue job.
Later, at some indeterminate point, Colt stopped doing the Python blue super-polish and used a slightly less polished finish.
To be clear, inside the factory, Colt to this day calls their top-of-the-line blue job "the Python blue". Colt advertising has used terms like "Royal Blue and Midnight Blue" over the years.
Also to be clear, the Python finish is not a special chemical bluing, it's totally a result of the extreme amount of polishing Colt did to the metal BEFORE it was blued.
Where other gun makers stopped polishing, Colt was just getting going.
Colt always made their own leather-covered wooden polishing wheels, and the final polish was done with polishing media the consistency of flour.
Colt was also running what amounted to a "Farm team" for polishers.
New polishers went to Colt's polishing school, then started work on Colt's cheaper guns, like the Official Police, while a Master polisher literally looked over their shoulder.
As they developed the skill and "touch", they moved up to better quality guns.
Only the very finest people with many years of experience were allowed to polish the Python.
All Pythons have a much higher level of polishing than other revolvers, but the early 1950's into the 60's guns had the true "Python Blue".
It just got to the point that Colt couldn't afford to continue spending that much time due to labor costs, and the level of polish dropped from "Unreal" to merely "Amazing".
If you ever have the opportunity to examine an early Python with an unworn "Python Finish", you will be astounded at the deep mirror-like finish.
It really is unlike anything you've ever seen before.
